How the Guidelines are Developed

Guideline Development

Guidelines are developed when the AHMF Board are presented with a need from the clinical community or new evidence is released regarding treatment of herpes viruses.

Gathering Evidence

Data is collated from a variety of published and unpublished sources from peer-reviewed journals, editorials and reviews. The AHMF make considerable efforts to ensure the information upon which our guidelines are based reproduces the evidence as accurately as possible.

Quality of Evidence

The data will usually comprise of a combination of randomised controlled trials, controlled trials without randomisation, cohort or case-control analytic studies, uncontrolled experiments and opinions of respected authorities, case reports, and expert committees.

Consensus

When the first draft is written it is distributed to all Board members for comment and consensus. All guidelines are discussed within the context of Board Meetings and are redistributed to Board before going to press and prior to printing and public release.

Use of Guidelines

The guidelines are intended for use by health care professionals and providers. The recommendations do not indicate an exclusive course of action, or serve as a standard of medical care. Individual patients may require different treatments from those specified in a given guideline. Users of these guidelines are strongly recommended to confirm that the information contained within them, especially drug indications, is correct by way of independent sources.

The AHMF accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies, information perceived as misleading, or the success of any treatment regimen detailed in the guidelines.
