News: Higher strength famciclovir now available under PBS scheme

Immunocompromised patients are set to benefit from the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) reimbursement of a new, higher (500 mg) strength antiviral medication offering improved dosing for genital herpes and shingles.

Famvir® (famciclovir) is now available on the PBS in a new strength of 500 mg for:

1. the episodic treatment or suppressive therapy of moderate-to-severe recurrent genital herpes in immunocompromised patients; and
2. the treatment of immunocompromised patients with herpes zoster (shingles) within 72 hours of the onset of the rash.
