Herpes Zoster, also known as Shingles, can cause significant pain and debility to affected individuals - usually the elderly and immunosuppressed. A new herpes zoster vaccine is available to prevent herpes zoster in susceptible individuals. The AHMF has just published a document outlining the current status of this vaccination. In addition, the AHMF has just released updated guidelines on the management of herpes zoster. The revised guidelines feature new content on the evaluation of zoster-related pain and a discussion of the role for oral corticosteroids. Finally, we are able to offer a reproduction of the paper The prevention and management of herpes zoster, by AHMF Board Member Tony Cunningham et al, originally published in the Medical Journal of Australia last February.
