How to take a swab for herpes

Herpes is most reliably diagnosed by taking a swab from the affected area and detecting HSV by viral culture or PCR.
- Taking a swab is not necessarily a straightforward procedure, however, since:
- The viral replication period is limited
- HSV is an intracellular organism
- Swabs are easily contaminated
- Material from herpes lesions may be infectious
