How to take a swab for herpes

Herpes is most reliably diagnosed by taking a swab from the affected area and detecting HSV by viral culture or PCR.

  • Taking a swab is not necessarily a straightforward procedure, however, since:
  • The viral replication period is limited
  • HSV is an intracellular organism
  • Swabs are easily contaminated
  • Material from herpes lesions may be infectious
